GH Female Musician Appreciation Month

April is marked in many places around the world as Jazz Appreciation Month. Let’s modify that into a celebration of an appreciation for our local GH female musicians. Today, we celebrate…

21. Stephy Senyor

She could hardly take her eyes off the fingerboard when she took up the bass guitar, with encouragement from her auntie, Della Hayes, in 2014. Her fingers seemed to freeze whenever she tried to move them across the strings but her first teacher, Bessa Simons, patiently helped loosen them up. Now, she dances with the guitar on stage and her fingers move swiftly as she thumbs, plucks and slaps the strings. She has no regrets paying attention to the bass guitar and admires how far she has come, knowing there’s still a lot to learn. She enjoys the playing of Philip Acquah and Gaddiel Amoah of the Patchbay and West Coast Ebusua bands respectively. She also appreciates how female Indian bassist, Mohini Dey, plays.
Stephy, who plays with the Women of Colour band, understands the bass guitar’s role in contemporary popular music is now more than just keeping time. She hopes to feature her bass as the lead instrument in a band in the future.
