April is marked in many places around the world as Jazz Appreciation Month. Let’s modify that into a celebration of an appreciation for our local GH female musicians. Today, we celebrate…
17. Abigail Aniapam
Those were tricky moments as Abigail Aboagyewa Aniapam tried to figure out proper hands and feet co-ordination when she started learning to play the drum set at the Great Lamptey Mills Institute in Accra at age 15. Now, there’s abundant flexibility as she grooves along on the snare and kick drums, Tom Toms and cymbals. She enjoys playing all kinds of styles but admits rhythms with an African feel, which she generally refers to as Africo, are her favourite. She likes how Ghanaian drummers Francis Osei and Paa Kow play. She adores the late Nigerian drummer, Tony Allen, who is credited with having invented Afro Beat with Fela Anikulapo Kuti. Apart from being the regular drummer for the Lipstick band, Abigail also pursues a solo project called Liagiba Africa GH where she is the drummer/lead singer. She has recorded an eight-track album, Yaba, under the Liagiba name.
