GH Female Musician Appreciation Month

April is marked in many places around the world as Jazz Appreciation Month. Let’s modify that into a celebration of an appreciation for our local GH female musicians. Today, we celebrate…

14. Abena Pomaa

There were guitars around at home while Abena was growing up because her father played for the Stax Dynamics which later became the Sappers band.
She fell in love with the idea of playing guitar in a band but her father was a reluctant teacher. He felt that was no terrain for females. He preferred to teach her brother who had no interest in music. Abena still managed to pick up some basics and got into a church that had musical equipment for easier access to a guitar. Playing at church programmes made members and neighbours notice her, leading to a recommendation to the Dzesi band when it started in 2009. Abena now plays with the Lipstick band. She’s grateful to Bessa Simons, who though a keyboards player, helped open up her scope on the guitar and music generally. She sings quite well and takes over the microphone anytime her band switches into the vintage Highlife mode.
