April is marked in many places around the world as Jazz Appreciation Month. Let’s modify that into a celebration of an appreciation for our local GH female musicians. Today, we celebrate…
11. Joana Denaka
Joana decided to learn to play the trumpet to prove to a friend, who played the side drum in the Holy Family Catholic Church Brass Band at Mataheko in Accra, that she was capable of dealing with a more difficult instrument.
Meeting pianist Charles Duwor turned out to be a blessing as he introduced her to jazz and stimulated her appetite to learn more. Prior to that, she was mainly into church and brass band stuff which she no longer found challenging.
She has played with several notable names including Amakye Dede, Amadzeba, Ebo Taylor, CK Mann, Paapa Yankson and Hugh Masekela. She was also at various times a member of the Miracle Wave, Dzesi and Lipstick bands. Her big ambition is to be rated among the best instrumentalists in Africa.
