KOD’s dream, drive & zeal that turns eyeballs onto Ghana

Touted as the night where music and fashion collide, it has been running for the past 9 years, a dream asset of its founder, the affable media personality and fashion designer Kofi Okyere Darko, better known as KOD.

A night to host the nation’s most captivating roll call of performers and intriguing designs from Ghana, Africa, and beyond, the dream has grown into a significant event fixture for the year. Commending him for his tenacity, PaJohn Bentsifi Dadson asked KOD if he feels accomplished establishing his flagship event, Rhythms-on-da-Runway.

I SHOULD,” retorts KOD, after a heavy sigh! “Getting it to be a fixture on the entertainment calendar, one that many people look forward to attending every year for the past 9 years, I feel quite accomplished.

However, with its status, a bit of support from the government, as well as the corporate sector, would compliment the dream, drive and zeal to make this event even better than it is”. Kofi thinks it’s taking far too long for the corporate sector to appreciate Ghana’s creative economy. “I wish the corporate community would pay more attention to aid the creative sector,” he muses.

He is, however, not so accommodating of the level of governmental support for the sector. “if government can support the ‘all Africa Music awards – afrima’, why not
indigenous events too?” “The person who hits the last nail to fit the stage, to some of the most thrilling performers on the night, are all Ghanaians,” he states. Kofi believes that over the years, the high energy event that features some great entertainment pulls in traffic from abroad, and causes eyeballs to focus on Ghana, and “people act like they don’t know what we are doing, and that is a major challenge,” says an almost deflated KOD.

But, in keeping with his usual bounce, his spirit lights up, when asked about how preparations for the upcoming edition, which comes off tomorrow night, at the Grand arena situated at the Accra international Conference Centre (AICC), on the theme: ‘The Masquerade,’ is coming along. “Samini headlines, alongside such great acts as Kidi, Efya, Edem, afriyie Wutah, Sefa, DBlack, Fameye, Elsie Duncan Williams and abiana, with Michael Stuckey from the US & Floewe from Swaziland!”

While our very own MzGee & Mapitso from the Rainbow nation of South Africa will be at the control tower on the Red Carpet, Ms aj Sarpong will be delivering on stage a thrilling ride as MC for the night set to showcase sensational performances and lavish designs from world-class artisans.

Rhythm-on-Runway always draws the city’s a-listers, and this weekend’s promises the same lineup of guests. Honourary lifetime tribute awards will be given to showbiz veterans, Pat Thomas, our own highlife maestro and nigeria’s Nollywood’s Richard Mofe Damijo (RMD), for holding it down in their respective fields for decades.
